Well written and comprehensive I decided to learn some Yiddish, the language of my ancestors I am starting from scratch, a true beginner After shopping on , this seemed like the right book Its title, Basic Yiddish, seems to imply that it is for beginners. However, now that the book has arrived, I see that I made a mistake One obvious thing missing from the entire book is any discussion at all of pronunciation The preface beginning on page vii could have alerted me This book assumes previous familiarity with the Yiddish alphabet and the ability to read printed Yiddish This book is intended to supplement other textbooks and learning materials and or serve as grammar reference and practice for all speakers of Yiddish Unfortunately, the limited exerpt available on jumps from page vi to page 1 and so omits the previous quotation should address this and include the preface in their exerpt. It is difficult to assign a fair star rating in this situation For a true beginner, I would give this book one star it is inappropriate On the other hand, for a member of the book s target audience, it may well be a 4 or 5 star book I have no reason to doubt its accuracy or challenge its organization I would say, though, that this thin book of 162 pages is overpriced at the 50 that I paid for it.I am still looking for a book on Yiddish that is written for the true beginner There does not appear to be much that is currently in print I have my sights set on Colloquial Yiddish. Very short, but for me, an intermediate student, it s a great tool for reviewing some of the basic grammar.
