Transcending ordinary.Despite the apparitions, the graveyards and the PTSD fueled nightmares, there is a mellowness to this excellent ghost story meets second chance romance That isn t to say there isn t a spook factor, violence and raised heart rates during the spicy scenes, but a horror story this is not.Pay attention to the plural word in the title, because the ghost haunting young Tyler isn t the only haunted soul in this book Back from two tours overseas, explosives expert Brett Leeds is Transcending ordinary.Despite the apparitions, the graveyards and the PTSD fueled nightmares, there is a mellowness to this excellent ghost story meets second chance romance That isn t to say there isn t a spook factor, violence and raised heart rates during the spicy scenes, but a horror story this is not.Pay attention to the plural word in the title, because the ghost haunting young Tyler isn t the only haunted soul in this book Back from two tours overseas, explosives expert Brett Leeds is recovering from injuries, but haunted in his nightmares His life gets a lotcomplicated upon discovering he has a toddler son with an intense fling he had when home briefly Young single mother Emily is trying to make amends for keeping her terrible secret The novel opens with the revelation, and follows the timeline of Emily, Brett and Tyler struggling to get reacquainted and trust one another I liked how author Kathryn Knight handled the emotions between Em and Brett throughout the book Confusion and hurt feelings mix with desire and compassion Getting in the way is the very real situation where individuals with PTSD distance themselves There was no excuse And yet, some small part of him searched for a way to absolve her of the betrayal as he drove away from her house Despite all the emotional confusion, these two are still as hot for each other as they were on a two week break four years ago Blistering attraction exists between two decent and good looking people, but in the past they were hampered by schedules out of their control, timing and timidity, and in the present they are skirting those same issues Lesson learned is to grab onto what you care about and work it out somehow Brett and Em s story unfolds in layers, and is interesting but ordinary The realism is compelling Knight makes you feel Em s trepidation of being a single parent and Brett s confusion upon learning he is a father The narration is heartfelt, yet never overly dramatized And then toddler Tyler starts talking to blank corners in the room.Brett and Em soon become convinced Tyler is being haunted Most of the time it seems benevolent, but there are those instances that point to danger for Tyler Trying to find a solution for the haunting brings the struggling couple closer, and banishing the ghost becomes imperative Meanwhile, a very real menace is hovering on the fringes, ready to pounce on Em This book is recommended for those who like a ghost story, a military story or second chance lovers It is a perfect Halloween selection Copy received from NetGalley for an honest review.

Haunted Souls, by Kathryn Knight, is a tale about forgiving and loving yourself, despite the guilt that weighs you down.Emily Shea had just introduced Sergeant Brett Leeds to their three year old son Tyler The two haven t seen each other in five years, and already the shock of a child begins to fall upon Brett While struggling with their tense relationship, as well as their lust for one another, Tyler, meanwhile, befriends an unknown entity named Josiah With a past that won t leave them alone Haunted Souls, by Kathryn Knight, is a tale about forgiving and loving yourself, despite the guilt that weighs you down.Emily Shea had just introduced Sergeant Brett Leeds to their three year old son Tyler The two haven t seen each other in five years, and already the shock of a child begins to fall upon Brett While struggling with their tense relationship, as well as their lust for one another, Tyler, meanwhile, befriends an unknown entity named Josiah With a past that won t leave them alone, and an uncertain future at stake, Emily and Brett must work together to ensure the safety of their son, even if it means putting up with each other Knight weaves a Gothic story about a couple who picks up the pieces of their past, and learn that, even with the harsh realities in the world, they could still find refuge in each other. To be honest, Brett irritated me quite a bit Emily did everything she could to get into contact with him, but he still blamed her Even so, he does demonstrate a certain protectiveness over her, and it s clear that he still has feelings for her, no matter what he says May attitude towards him changed when I finally realized the hell he d gone through Though his relationship with Emily and Tyler are slowly blossoming, he still has to deal with the nightmares he has, with Death carefully shrouding him in dark delusions Then there s Emily, who struggled with both her guilt and her worry for Tyler But even so, the two managed to pull together through Joe s assault, and again, through Josiah Again and again, these characters show that, despite everything that s happened, family is still family Even if you re separated by time, or memories, or even death, family is always going to be there for you This idea of family is an overarching concept of the book Emily and Brett were still able to find one another, though there is a lifetime of sorrow between the two Josiah waited for his mother, and when he couldn t find her, he began looking everywhere for her, even as a ghost Even Gayle, who was domestically abused by her husband, took her son and ran A parent s love for their child, friendship, and even romantic love are all interwoven within the words Knight explores all aspects of that mysterious force, and shows that love is truly timeless Overall, I enjoyed this book From the characters, to the theme of love, Knight creates a dark, yet tender world that will leave the reader breathless As such, I would give this book a rating of 4.2 out of 5 stars, and would recommend it to those who enjoy contemporary romance, and the supernatural genres in general
